Understanding Partial Hospitalization (PHP)

At the DBT Institute of Michigan, our Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) provides a
highly structured and supportive treatment environment for individuals who need more
intensive care than traditional outpatient but do not require inpatient hospitalization.

Our PHP is grounded in Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), an evidence-based
treatment developed by Marsha Linehan that is designed to help individuals who
experience intense emotions, self-destructive behaviors, chronic suicidality, and
significant difficulties in relationships and daily functioning.

This program helps individuals stabilize, build essential coping skills, and begin creating
a life worth living.

Who PHP Is For?

Our DBT PHP may be appropriate for individuals who:

  • Experience intense or rapidly changing emotions
  • Struggle with self-harm urges or suicidal thoughts
  • Feel overwhelmed by daily life or relationships
  • Have recently discharged from inpatient or residential treatment
  • Need more structure and support than weekly therapy provides
  • Want to learn practical skills to manage emotions, relationships, and distress

Many individuals who attend PHP have difficulties related to emotion dysregulation,
trauma, depression, anxiety, or Borderline Personality Disorder.

What Makes DBTIMI’s DBT PHP Different?

DBTIMI is one of Michigan’s leading providers of evidence-based DBT. Our team is
extensively trained in DBT and committed to delivering treatment with adherence to the
model developed by Marsha Linehan. Our program provides comprehensive DBT,
meaning treatment includes all modes of the treatment (skills training, individual
therapy, skills coaching, consultation team meetings for providers, and ancillary
treatment such as medication management) and each mode is constantly being
monitored through rigorous program evaluation methods to ensure it is meeting the
function. We are the only fully dedicated and comprehensive DBT PHP in the state of
Michigan. Most PHP programs only provide DBT skills training as part of an eclectic treatment.

Program Structure

Currently available, in person, at our Mason clinic Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.
Coming Fall 2026 to our Metro Detroit clinic, PHP for adults Monday through Friday!

Our PHP includes:

  • Programming Monday – Friday (6 hours a day)
  • Four DBT skills groups per day
  • Twice a week DBT individual therapy sessions
  • 24/7 skills coaching
  • Weekly family therapy sessions
  • Twice a week medication management sessions

The goal is to provide enough treatment intensity to support meaningful change while
still allowing individuals to return home each evening and practice the skills they are
learning in their everyday lives.

PHP vs. Inpatient Treatment

Both inpatient treatment and partial hospitalization are effective paths to recovery—the right choice depends on your situation:

  • Inpatient Treatment involves 24/7 care in a treatment center, including housing, meals, and constant supervision. It’s the most intensive level of support, ideal for those beginning their recovery or needing medical stabilization.

  • Partial Hospitalization (PHP) offers a step down in structure while still providing intensive therapy each day. You’ll receive comprehensive care during the day and return home to your loved ones in the evening.

Because PHP combines flexibility with focused support, it’s a great option for individuals transitioning out of inpatient care or anyone seeking a strong therapeutic foundation without full hospitalization.
